Work experience is very important and it can make you stand out in a competitive pool. If you want to start a career as a digital marketer, one thing you would agree with me is that having experience is very important, especially as a fresher.

Most business owners do not care about your degree or whether you went to school. All they care most about in 2022 is whether you can get the work done. They are concerned about you having hands-on experience. Do you have the skills required to carry out the job effectively?

So, how do you beat that? Particularly, as a fresher who needs the skills and experience to start your career in digital marketing? In this article, I will be answering that by sharing just 3 ways you can get hands-on experience in digital marketing as a fresher which include:

  • Market yourself online
  • Enrol for apprenticeship or internship roles.
  • Network with people in your field or niche.

Find out how to write an entry-level social media cover letter that will get you an interview with templates.

Market yourself online:

As a digital marketer, one thing you should be known for is being proficient in the skill of marketing. You have to be able to market brands or companies’ products and services and what better way to show that you possess such mastery is the ability to put yourself out there. You are your promoter! People can’t find you or your services if you don’t put yourself out there. Engage with people in your field, and follow people who have advanced in your Job area.

Letting your recruiter or target market find you is key when it comes to getting or finding a job. Put out content related to your niche, whether on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn. LinkedIn is another social media platform that is very powerful. As a fresher in digital marketing, you would want to leverage the opportunity on this platform. Recruiters are looking for the next talent to hire daily on that platform, whether for an internship or full-time roles.

So, you should be active on that platform. Optimised your bio, and share your achievements, education, and new skills acquired. Make sure to put out content that other people can digest and get solutions from. That way, brands or companies and recruiters can see how you can be of great asset to their business. So, you need to develop that skill of marketing/putting out yourself to your target company or recruiter.

2. Enrol for apprenticeship or Internship role:

Another best way to get that hands-on experience in digital marketing as a beginner is by applying for apprenticeship or internship roles. These are roles that provide and prepare you for real-life tasks to solve. These opportunities could be paid or unpaid but what is most important is being able to develop real-life experience in that field which will help you build a strong work portfolio. Reach out to business or brand owners who might need your services and apply or request internship positions. Let them know how you can be of help to their businesses. Find their pain- point and address it. It could be that they need a better graphic designer, a copywriter or an ads expert, whatever digital marketing skills you are confident about, propose your skills and services to them either for a small fee or for recommendations at the end of the program, either way, you both are winning.

There is a market workplace that provides such an opportunity for newbies. They mentor, guide and give you tasks to carry out and at the end of your apprenticeship, you would have built a strong work portfolio and be ready to take up full-time jobs. At the end of your apprenticeship, if you perform well, you also get to be promoted to an entry-level position or be referred to another brand that might need your services full time. It’s called ACADUIM.

I got my first digital marketing job as a professional on Acaduim after my 3-months apprenticeship. This is a marketplace that helps you find experienced mentors who will coach you, guide you and give you real-life tasks to carry out and at the end of your apprenticeship, they also help in recommending you on your CV, LinkedIn and work portfolio hence giving you an edge over your peers in the digital marketing field. On this platform, you also have access to free digital marketing courses to help you in your journey. There are jobs you can apply to as a freelancer in the freelancing marketplace. All you need is just to sign up which is free, follow the prompts, and then find yourself a mentor. Sign up here.

3. Networking with people in your field or niche.

This is an area you do not want to overlook when it comes to looking or applying for jobs. Just like how reaching out to recruiters and marketing yourself for recruiters and business owners to see you, networking is twice as important!

Networking is the action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts.

Find out digital marketing social media groups to join, follow the professionals in your field and engage their content. I do not mean you should stalk them but engage them meaningfully. Attend networking programmes in your niche. By that, you get to meet people in your field and if there are job opportunities like internships, workshops, volunteering and apprenticeships, you will be the first to know.

When networking you get to exchange ideas and information that could land you your next job for free or the next skills needed to develop. This is also an opportunity to grow your work relationship that will be useful in building your career. Be open to meeting people, asking questions and contributing back meaningfully.

This is the end of this article. Thanks for reading.

Though the ways of acquiring experience in digital marketing as a fresher are not limited to these 3 ways discussed above. Rather, I have found them effective and fast in getting work experience and building a strong work portfolio as a newbie.
